about

Butterflies is an album modern piano playing inspired by the wonders of Irish Traditional music. It seeks to capture the spirit of freedom and mysteriousness that is prevalent in the Irish Tradition. The album is performed on Nathan Townley’s personal upright piano, a 1991 Studio Hamilton Baldwin. The first 4 tunes are performed with a felt mute that his father modified onto the instrument, giving the sound a unique rhythmic quality and a soft texture. The latter 5 tunes are played with the vibrant, normal sound of the piano. The album features 3 tunes in odd time signature (7/8), 1 tune featuring Pennywhistle and Bodhran, and 1 tune featuring a handmade cajon accompanying the piano in a reel.

Join Nathan as he treads new ground in both piano playing and in Irish music.
